Journal of Buddhist Ethics | Review: The Study of Buddhism Under Colonialism

Curators of the Buddha is the first critical history of the study of Buddhism in the West and the first work to bring the insights of colonial and postcolonial cultural studies to bear on this field. After an overview of the origins of Buddhist studies in the early nineteenth century, the essays focus on important "curators of the Buddha," such as Aurel Stein, D.

Suzuki, and Carl Jung, who, as they created and maintained the discipline, played a significant role in disseminating knowledge about Buddhism in the West. More recently, my work in this area has examined the period prior to the twentieth century. A third focus is the Tibetan author Gendun Chopel , considered by many to be the most important Tibetan intellectual of the twentieth century, renowned as a poet, essayist, historian, philosopher, and painter.

Curators of the Buddha

A fourth focus has been an effort to bring the fruits of scholarship on Buddhism to a larger audience, especially to scholars and students in other disciplines, through translations, anthologies, and reference works. In my graduate courses, I read a wide variety of Tibetan Buddhist works with students with advanced language skills. I also teach seminars open to all graduate students in Buddhist Studies as well as other disciplines.
